Food Production
>> Would you say organic food is better for you, the animal and our planet?
I would say so too, and that has been the major marketing for organic food. But, as my father always encouraged me to do (and our oldest daughter regularly practices), always ask “why” and “how”.
And the answer to WHY organic food is better for us, the animal, and the planet has been extensively documented. Until you zoom out to a larger scale. Then we see that the HOW has some (potential) major problems. Which has mainly to do with the amount of land it uses.
Conventional farming has its own array of problems, which manifest on a small and large scale.
Personally, in my idealized world, organic farming feels like the answer to improving our food, ending animal suffering and reducing harmful emissions. Unfortunately there is no simple solution, yet. Shifting the scales fully biological or conventional will NOT solve our problems.
So I decided to combine my drawing and research skills to tell you about the two current paths of food production and why they are both right and wrong at the same time.
Please keep in mind that this is a simplification of the situation. Sometimes there is only a slight distinction between conventional and organic farming. It is meant to have you start thinking about the complications of large scale food production.
As always, balance is key.
TLDR; More research is needed ;), especially into how to reduce land use of biological farming, if you ask me.
